Taketsuru Japanese Pure Malt from the Nikka house—a composition of single malts from both Yoichi and Miyagikyo—is nothing short of symphonic genius.

Nose: It opens with an orchestral prelude of tropical fruits—pineapple, mango, passion fruit, and orange—each note rounded and vibrant. There’s a delicate interplay with pipe tobacco and praline-filled chocolate, balanced by a nutty underpinning. A whisper of balsamic, a trace of umami broth, and—yes—a faint iron tang of blood give it a bold complexity. A fleeting touch of woodsmoke and a curious dusty nuance tease the edges of the sensory experience.

Palate: The performance crescendos into a sweet, creamy wave of tropical delight, now broadened with plums, grapefruit, walnuts, and fresh figs. But the sweetness is tempered, counterpointed by a vivid spice overture of black pepper, cinnamon, and cardamom. A smoky undercurrent, like lapsang souchong tea, rises confidently, taking the palate to new heights.

Finish: Just as you think the show’s over, a final flourish of fresh menthol graces the medium-long finish, leaving a clean and invigorating encore.

If single malts are individual instruments and blends their collective symphony, this is a masterpiece of harmony and complexity, conducted with expert precision. One for the ages.

Colour: gold.

Nose: it’s another dimension for sure, with many more fruits, even if it’s no big whisky. Quite light globally but complex, malty, slightly earthy (just like many Japanese malts that we just tried) and otherwise rather floral. Honeysuckle, lily of the valley, dandelions, then more honey and beeswax, vanilla, coconut (fresh American oak), oranges, bananas… It’s rather delicate whisky but it’s quite lively as well. Also a little peat and mint.

Mouth: rich, peatier than on the nose and very fruity (fruit salad, blood oranges, pineapples). There are also many candied and pastry-like notes, butterscotch, baklavas (orange blossom), jams, honey… It’s very good, very fresh, kind of sexy (but not vulgar at all).

Finish: rather long, smooth, with more spices (sweet cinnamon, cardamom, aniseed), honey, peat and a little spearmint.

Comments: perfectly composed and kind of fresher than most high-end Scottish blends. I find the 21 quite variable, sometimes it’s fabulous and sometimes its, well, a little less fabulous. This one was sort of between both in my opinion.

Taketsuru 21 was crowned World’s Best Blended Malt Whisky at the 2010 World Whiskies Awards.(remember this is a blended single malt, not a blended whisky — meaning there’s no grain whisky added) It really is a fabulous whisky, and for those of you who enjoyed the brilliant 17 year old this offers just a bit more richness, a little hint more chocolate and coffee.
